HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team saw its four-match win streak come to an end in a four-set loss to No. 2 UC Irvine, Friday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19.
The 12th-ranked Warriors (6-6, 3-4 MPSF) were led by
Steven Hunt's match-high 19 kills. After struggling with four early hitting errors, Hunt went errorless for the better part of the next three sets. The senior hit .289 and tallied five digs and one service ace.
UC Irvine transfers
Taylor Averill and
Nick West combined for 18 kills on .368 hitting against for their former teammates. Averill tallied 10 kills, five digs, and two blocks while West had eight kills and three blocks.
UCI (8-2, 4-2) was led by Carson Clark, who had 19 kills and hit a blistering .429. Jeremy Dejno added 15 kills and three aces and Dan McDonnell had 12 kills and four blocks. As a team, the Anteaters hit .356 and recorded five service aces. UCI out-blocked Hawai'i, 11-to-4.
A 6-1 run gave UH a 12-7 lead in Set 1. The Warriors led 17-12 before the Anteaters scored three straight to pull to within two. Moments later, UC Irvine stuffed Hunt to close to within 21-20, UH's first hitting error in 18 swings. Two points later, Averill was stuffed tying the score at 22.
Hunt's third kill followed by a UCI net violation gave UH set point. After a Hunt hitting error, Averill put a close to the set at 25-23.
The Anteaters used their prolific serving, including three aces, in a 25-20 win in Set 2. UCI jumped out to a 15-12 lead at the midway point of Set 2. UCI extended its lead to 19-14 following an ace by Jeremy Dejno. UH pulled to within 19-18 after the two UCI hitting errors and a kill by Hunt.
After a Hunt service error, Dejno ended a long rally with his eighth kill and Clark followed with an ace giving the Anteaters a four-point cushion and the UCI rolled to the win tying the match at 1-1 heading into intermission.
UH took control early in Set 3 until the Anteaters tied the score at 18. UCI took its first lead at 21-20 after a hitting error by Marks. The Anteaters took a 23-21 lead following back-to-back kills by Clark. UH tied it at 23 with kills by Averill and West. Clark gave UCI set point and D'Amore stuffed West to end the set.
The Anteaters led for the early part of Set 4 before a three-point UH spurt tied the score at 11. UCI pushed its lead back to three at 16-13 and the Warriors would not get any closer.
The teams play again Sunday at 5:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
