HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team suffered its second straight loss with a 63-56 setback to Pepperdine Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Pepperdine set the tempo early and UH (4-3) found itself in catch-up mode all game, before falling short in the end.
UH scored a season low 56 points and struggled offensively for the second straight game, connecting on just 33 percent of its shots. The 'Bows also doomed any comeback by missing half its free throw attempts, including 11 alone in the second half.
Christian Standhardinger posted his team-leading third double-double of the year with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. The junior, however, shot just 4-of-15 from the floor. Freshman forward
Isaac Fotu chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds, while senior center
Vander Joaquim finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Jordan Baker led the Waves (6-3) with 15 points, while Caleb Willis added 11 points, including seven straight points during a key second-half stretch. Nearly half of Pepperdine's 55 shots came from behind the arc as the Waves connected on 10-of-24 three pointers.
After a back-and-forth first half, Pepperdine had the final say scoring the final eight points to take a 31-23 advantage at the break. UH shot just 29 percent from the floor in the first half.
Behind some tough defense, the 'Bows clawed back in the second half and pulled even, 38-38, on a pair of Fotu free throws seven minutes in. But the Waves responded with a 10-2 run—including seven straight points by Willis—to take a lead they would not relinquish. UH would get no closer than five thereafter as the Waves held on for their sixth win in its last seven contests.
UH next heads to Moloka'i for the first-ever NCAA Division I contest on the island versus Chaminade on Saturday, Dec. 15. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at “The Barn” – Moloka'i High School's home gym.
