HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team battled back from a two-sets to none deficit but fell in five to No. 9 Lewis, 25-21, 25-11, 16-25, 23-25, 15-11 Friday night on the second day of the Outrigger Hotels Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The 11
th-ranked Warriors struggled in the opening two frames before rebounding in the third and fourth sets and sending the match to a fifth game. But in the deciding set, the Flyers (2-2) jumped on top to a 6-3 lead and never looked back, stuffing
Steven Hunt on match point.
Hunt led the Warriors (2-2) with 17 kills while freshman outside hitter
JP Marks had 14 kills. Middle blocker
Nick West added 10 kills and hit .444 with four blocks. Libero
Nick Castello tied his career-high with 13 digs.
As a team, UH hit .155 compared to .339 for Lewis, who was led by Jay Petty's match-high 22 kills.
In Set 1, the Warriors grabbed the early lead at 9-5 before the Flyers tied it at 14. Lewis took its first lead following back-to-back kills by Ian Karbiener and extended its lead to 20-17 after two straight UH errors. Consecutive kills by Jay Petty gave the Flyers set point and Karbiener ended it at 25-21.
The Flyers pulled ahead early in Set 2 and never looked back extending their lead to as much as 12 at 20-8 with a seven-point spurt during a 12-2 run. Lewis hit .524 in the 25-11 rout while the Warriors committed 11 errors with just six kills.
Hawai'i got things going early in Set 3 with back-to-back aces by Marks. UH surged ahead 14-11 midway through and was the first to reach 20 at 20-15 following a Marks kill. After a service error, the Warriors closed out the set with five straight points capped by a block by
Jarrod Lofy and
Harrison Carroll.
The Warriors came out on fire in Set 4, jumping out to a 9-4 lead, sparked by three straight Warrior blocks. The Flyers chipped away, taking their first lead of the set at 13-12 after three straight Warrior hitting errors. UH regained the lead and led 21-17 before the Flyers pulled to within one. A huge block by West gave UH a 22-20 lead and the Warriors sided-out until Marks' kill gave UH set point and the Warriors closed it out with Marks' 12
th kill.
In the day's earlier match, UCLA (4-1) swept past Springfield (0-2), 25-20, 25-21, 25-22. The Bruins hit .395 with Thomas Amberg leading the way with 13 kills on .688 hitting.
The tournament concludes Saturday with Lewis and Springfield at 4:00 p.m. followed by UH and UCLA at 7:00 p.m.
