Game Notes
RENO, Nev. – A pair of red-hot teams meet in an early-season Wesern Athletic Conference showdown when the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team (10-6, 2-0 WAC) takes on Nevada (13-3, 3-0 WAC) on Saturday, Jan. 14. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT) at the Lawlor Events Center.
The Rainbow Warriors have won eight of their last 10 games, including a huge 74-68 overtime win at Fresno State on Thursday. Senior guard
Zane Johnson scored a game-high 24 points, including six three-pointers, while junior center
Vander Joaquim came through with 23 points and 16 rebounds, while scoring 14 of the team's final 20 points. The win gave UH its first 2-0 start in league play since the 2005-06 campaign.
The Wolf Pack, meanwhile, are winners of 10 straight and sit atop the WAC standings, a half game ahead of 2-0 Hawai'i and New Mexico State. Nevada nailed a school-record 16 three-pointers in an 81-57 rout of San Jose State on Thursday. Four players average double-digit scoring for Nevada, led by sophomore point guard Deonte Burton 15.4 ppg and 4.9 apg.
UH will need all the momentum of its big road win as it faces a Wolf Pack squad that sports an 8-1 home record this season. The 'Bows also look to get the Reno monkey off its back as the program has gone winless in 14 all-time visits.
Following its game at Nevada, the Rainbow Warriors return home to host Louisiana Tech (Jan. 19) and New Mexico State (Jan. 21).
