Majam Earns CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Honors

HONOLULU—University of Hawai'i centerfielder Kelly Majam has been voted to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 first team on Friday. She is just the ninth player in UH history to earn the prestigious honor.

Majam, a sophomore from Pine Valley, Calif., has started all 49 games for Hawai'i and currently has a .282 batting average (40-for-143) with 30 runs scored, seven home runs, 18 RBI and a team-high nine doubles. Majam also leads UH with 31 walks and has a 1.000 fielding percentage.

In the classroom, Majam—a secondary education major in physical education—has the highest GPA on the 2011 Rainbow Wahine team. Last year as a freshman, she earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) scholar-athlete honors as well as Academic All-WAC honors. Majam is now eligible to be selected to be voted a CoSIDA Academic All-American.

Majam and Utah State designated player, Shasta Tyteca, were the only players from the Western Athletic Conference to be selected to the District 8 team.

Only eight other Rainbow Wahine have ever earned the honor: Tracy Loo (1992), Joyce Lum (1998), Stacie Hirano (2002), Kate Judd (2002), Tracie Uchima (2004), Brandi Peiler (2008), Julie Franklin (2008, '09), and Clare Warwick, who is the only Rainbow Wahine to earn the honor three years (2007, '08, '09).

In order to be nominated for Academic All-District and All-America honors, a player must have completed at least one academic year at UH; must be a starter or significant reserve; must have a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average; and must have completed at least one full academic year at her institution. Voting is done by member of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
