FRESNO, Calif – The University of Hawai'i baseball team was defeated Monday by Fresno State, 12-2. The Rainbows fall to 24-19 overall and 9-3 in the WAC, with Fresno State improving to 30-9 overall and 10-5 in conference. The Bulldogs won via the 10-run mercy rule.
The Rainbows threw seven pitchers on the mound, with starter Connor Little (3-4) receiving the loss in just one and two-thirds innings of work. Tom Harlan (4-2) earned the win for FSU, allowing two runs in 6.1 innings of work.
Jeff Van Doornum and Sean Montplaisir both batted 2-3 for the 'Bows, with Van Doornum adding two RBI. Jordan Ribera and Kenny Wise recorded two hits, two runs, and three RBI each to lead Fresno State.
The Bulldogs added to a one-run lead with six runs in the fourth inning. Garrett Weber and Wise led off the inning with a pair of solo homeruns, as FSU batted around the order to take the big lead. The Rainbows showed signs of life in the sixth inning when Van Doornum doubled in a pair of runs, but that would cap the scoring for Hawai'i.
The 'Bows now travel to Reno to take on the University of Nevada in a four-game WAC series. Game one will be Thursday, March 5, at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time (3:00 p.m. HST).
