SAN JOSE, Calif. – The No. 5 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team (18-9) finished sixth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships Sunday, May 1 after falling short to No. 4 USC, 8-7 at the San Jose State Aquatics Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine battled back-and-forth through the entire match but ran out of time in the final quarter after USC (18-6) pulled ahead by two with just over a minute left. UH held a 4-2 advantage in the third quarter, but the Trojans went on a four-goal run to steal the lead 6-4 with 4:27 left to play in the final period.
The Rainbow Wahine tied the score 6-6 following two goals by seniors
Leonie Van Der Molen (3:57) and
Carmen Eggens (2:32), but Joelle Bekhazi answered back with two in a row for USC. Van Der Molen found the net with just 43 seconds left, but the Rainbow Wahine couldn't pull ahead in time.
Van Der Molen led UH with four goals, while sisters Monika and
Carmen Eggens added two and one, respectively.
UH now awaits a chance to be one of three at-large selections at the NCAA Women's Water Polo Championships. Selections will be announced Monday, May 2.
