SAN JOSE, Calif.  – The No. 5 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team opened the 2011 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament with an 11-9 loss to host and No. 7 San Jose State Friday at the Aquatics Center.

With the loss the Rainbow Wahine are relegated to the consolation bracket and can finish no higher than fifth place. UH (17-8) will next face San Diego State Saturday at 11:30 a.m. (8:30 a.m. HT). The No. 9 Aztecs fell to No. 2 Cal in a tight 7-6 match to kick off the tournament.

The Rainbow Wahine entered this year's tournament as the No. 3 seed after their highest-ever finish in the MPSF regular season. However, the No. 6 seeded Spartans (21-11) spoiled UH's championship hopes while also avenging a 12-9 loss to the Rainbow Wahine in UH's season opener on Feb. 3. It is the third straight year that UH has stumbled in the conference quarterfinals.

Andrea Vogt, who leads the conference in total goals scored, powered the Spartans to the win with five goals, including four in the decisive second half. UH, meanwhile got hat tricks from seniors Leonie Van Der Molen (3) and Saara Majuri (3), but it wasn't enough. Junior Monika Eggens, the conference leader in goals per match (2.63) was limited to just one goal.

The match was tight in the first half with the teams dead-locked, 3-3, at the break. However, the Spartans out-scored UH, 5-2, in the third quarter and tacked on the first goal of the fourth quarter to take an insurmountable four-goal lead.

UH now faces No. 7 seed San Diego State. The Rainbow Wahine defeated the Aztecs, 17-7, in Honolulu in the only previous meeting of the year on March 24.
