Boise State Holds Off Hawai`i Softball, 2-1

Box Score

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i softball team (30-14, 8-5 WAC) fell to Boise State (27-15, 10-3 WAC), 2-1 in the three-game series' opener on Friday night. Hawai`i starter Stephanie Ricketts suffered the loss in a complete game effort at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Broncos broke through on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. With one out, Devon Bridges drew a four-ball walk and came home on Christina Capobianco's home run to straight away centerfield. After a ground out to short, Boise State proceeded to load the bases on another walk and two consecutive singles but Ricketts got a comebacker to end the inning and the rally.

The 'Bows cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kelly Majam laced an opposite-field single to leftfield. The leftfielder bobbled the ball allowing Majam to scoot to second. Majam was then driven home from second on a line-shot single up the middle by Jessica Iwata, leaving the Broncos with a 2-1 lead.

Ricketts (18-11, 5-5 WAC) gave up two runs on six hits with four walks and six strike outs in seven innings of work.

Broncos' starter Aubray Zell fired a complete game, giving up one run on five hits with no walks and four strike outs.

It was Hawai`i's first conference loss at home this season and it marked the first win for Boise State against the Rainbow Wahine. Hawai`i leads the series 7-to-1 in eight games played.

The two teams square off again tomorrow in the series ending doubleheader starting at 4:00 pm. The Rainbow Wahine will be wearing special pink uniforms in support of Under Armour's “Power in Pink” campaign for breast cancer awareness.
