Water Polo Falls Short To No. 2 California

HONOLULU – The No. 5 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team fell to No. 2 California on Saturday, Apr. 2 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex, dropping to a 13-6, 3-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record.
 
California (20-3, 5-0 MPSF) controlled the pace of the game from the start, outscoring UH 2-0 in the first quarter. The Rainbow Wahine came back to tie the score 3-3 at halftime and later again in the third, but never could pull ahead, and fell short by just one goal in the end.
 
UH caught up with three goals in the second quarter by junior Monika Eggens, sophomore Amarens Genee and senior Carmen Eggens. Carmen Eggens tied it 3-3 at 1:04, striking in a goal after receiving the assist from Genee.
 
The Rainbow Wahine trailed again in third, Cal outscoring them 3-1. Freshman Kelly McKee fired in two penalty shots in the final quarter, the second bringing UH just one point behind the Golden Bears. With less than two minutes left to tie the score, the Rainbow Wahine couldn't pull ahead in time.
 
McKee recorded a hat trick, scoring three of UH's six goals while Emily Csikos led Golden Bears with two goals.  
 
The Rainbow Wahine will continue action on the road at the Santa Clara Invitational from Apr. 8-10. They will also play at No. 1 Stanford on Apr. 9 at 6:00 p.m. PT in MPSF play.
