HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team defeated Louisiana Tech Monday, 5-2. The Rainbows win the series versus the Bulldogs and improve to a WAC-best 7-1 and 21-15 overall. LaTech drops to 3-5 in conference and 18-18 overall.
The Rainbows opened the scoring in the second inning when Michael Blake (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) doubled in Zach Swasey (2-4, 1 R) from first base. Blake then scored off an infield error, advancing all the way home on the play.
The Bulldogs evened the game with two runs in the third inning. Consecutive doubles by Kyle Roliard (2-4, 1 R) and Mark Threlkeld (1-3, 2 RBI) helped LaTech tie the game.
Both teams went scoreless until the seventh inning when Jeff Van Doornum doubled in A.J. Bayus and Kolten Wong to give UH a 4-2 lead. Van Doornum then came home one batter later on a Bulldog error, as the 'Bows took a 5-2 lead.
Blair Walters (4-1) earned the win in relief of Zach Gallagher. He tossed two and one-third shutout innings before Lenny Linsky pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his seventh save.
There were 2,462 tickets sold for the contest, and a turnstile count of 1,207.
UH next takes a break from conference play to host Valparaiso University. The 'Bows and Crusaders will play a three-game series starting Thursday, April 21.
