Men’s Volleyball Completes Rare Sweep Of Pepperdine

Box Score

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team completed the series sweep of No. 9 Pepperdine Saturday night in the second of two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches at the Stan Sheriff Center. Sets scores were 25-20, 25-15, and 25-19.

The Warriors (8-9, 6-6 MPSF) took huge leads to start each set in sweeping the season series for the first time since 2001 and winning both matches in straight sets for the first time since 1996.

All-American opposite Jonas Umlauft had a team-high 16 kills on .560 hitting. Outside hitter Joshua Walker added 11 kills and Steven Hunt had seven kills..

As a team, the Warriors hit .438, compared to .167 for the Waves (6-9, 4-9), who were led by Maurice Torres' match-high 17 kills.

UH jumped out to a 13-7 lead in Set 1 with seven kills in nine swings while the Waves committed four early errors. The Warriors led by as much as seven in the set before cruising to a 25-20 victory.

It was much of the same in Set 2 as the Warriors led 15-7 following a six-point run, all with Nejc Zemljak at the service line. Moments later, UH built its largest lead at 23-12. The loudest cheers for the Waves came when Ryan Leung, a Hawai'i Baptist Academy, subbed in late and recorded a kill.

After the Warriors jumped out to a 16-10 lead, the Waves bunched together a three-point run, its first and only and of the match, to pull within three. But that was as close as Pepperdine would get as the Warriors closed out the match with a kill by Hunt.

UH continues its homestand with a two-match series against Pacific, March 11 and 12 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
