HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team picked up a feel-good win in its final home match of the season, taking down No. 40 Cal Poly, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 4-8 overall while handing the Mustangs (10-3) just their third loss of the year.
After a playing a gauntlet of highly ranked squads this year, the Rainbow Warriors finally broke through against the 40th-ranked Mustangs by winning five of six singles matches. With the team results already in hand, the teams did not play doubles.
The win was highlighted by the final home appearance for senior
Dennis Lajola. Lajola, a three-time all-conference player and the cornerstone of UH's three Western Athletic Conference championship squads, fell behind one set before digging deep and rallying for a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 win over No. 97 Andre Dome at the No. 1 court.
Another UH senior was victorious on the day as
Jeremy Tweedt made quick work of Jordan Bridge on the No. 3 court, winning 7-5, 6-0, to claim UH's first point of the day. Also picking up wins were junior
Leo Rosenberg on the No. 2 court and freshmen
Jonathan Brooklyn and
Jared Spiker on the No. 4 and 6 courts, respectively.
The Rainbow Warriors will now play its final six regular-season matches on the road, beginning with a meeting versus conference rival Fresno State in Moscow, Idaho on April 8.
