SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team (9-4, 2-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) took two matches today at the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State, at the Aztec Aquaplex. The Rainbow Wahine defeated No. 17 Cal State Northridge, 9-5 and Wagner, 14-7.
UH started the day strong, earning a 2-0 first quarter advantage over CSUN. The Matadors came back to score four goals in the second period, but the Rainbow Wahine put in three and held on for a 5-4 lead at halftime.
The Rainbow Wahine outscored the CSUN again in the third quarter while holding the Matadors to just one goal for a 7-5 lead. In the final period, UH kept CSUN silent and added two goals before taking the match 9-5.
UH earned a 9-2 lead over the Seahawks by halftime, outscoring them 3-1 in the first quarter and 6-1 in the second. The Rainbow Wahine held Wagner to one goal again in the third, and added four more goals for a 12-3 lead.
The Seahawks attempted to come back in the final period, scoring four goals, but the Rainbow Wahine held on for a 14-7 victory after adding one final goal that quarter.
UH continues the Aztec Invitational tomorrow, as they take on Princeton at 10:00 a.m. PT.
