Rainbow Baseball Holds On To Top Portland

Box score

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team defeated Portland tonight, 5-3. The Rainbows improve to 6-8 while the Pilots drop to 7-5. Connor Little (2-0) earned the win for UH, tossing five and two-thirds innings allowing three runs and recording six strikeouts. Starter Owen Jones (1-1) was tagged with the loss for Portland in just one inning of work.

The top of the order did the damage for UH, as Breland Almadova, Sean Montplaisir, and Kolten Wong each recorded two hits and two runs. Zack Swasey added one hit, one run, and one RBI.

Matt Mardesich batted 2-4 with two runs and one RBI to lead Portland.

The Rainbows jumped all over the Pilots with four first inning runs. Jones faced the entire UH lineup, recording two walks and two hit batsmen. Wong and Almadova hit singles with Swasey adding an RBI-double.

The 'Bows added another run in the fourth inning, but solo homeruns by Mardesich in the fourth inning and Riley Henricks (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) in the sixth helped Portland cut the lead to 5-3. That was as close as the Pilots would get, as Lenny Linsky pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to pick up the save.

There were 3,347 tickets issued for the contest and a turnstile count of 2,234.

Hawai'i and Portland continue their series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 3:05 p.m.
