Rainbow Baseball Falls To Portland

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team was defeated today by Portland, 5-1. The game was the series opener as the Rainbows fall to 5-8 while the Pilots improve to 7-4.  

Matt Sisto (0-2) was tagged with the loss for UH, pitching six and two-thirds innings allowing one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts. Chris Johnson (1-0) earned the win for Portland in seven innings of work. He allowed one run with six strikeouts. 

Kolten Wong led the 'Bows with two hits and one run scored. Jeff Van Doornum batted 1-4 and Michael Blake (0-3) added one RBI. 

Portland scored first with a run in the top of the second inning. An RBI-single by Kevin Armijo (2-3, 1 RBI) scored Matt Mardesich (1-3, 1 R) from second base. UH finally got on the board when Blake's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning brought Van Doornum home from third. 

The 'Bows threatened on several occasions, but Portland pulled away with a three-run ninth inning. Riley Hendricks (1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI) delivered a two-RBI single to give his team a 5-1 lead. 

There were 2,434 tickets issued for the contest and a turnstile count of 1,133. 

UH and Portland continue the series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
