STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 5 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team (2-1, 1-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) split a pair of matches today, falling to No. 4 UCLA, 7-6 and sweeping No. 13 Indiana, 8-3 at the Stanford Invitational.
The Bruins had a comfortable lead over the RainbowWahine by second period after Priscilla Orozco scored three goals for UCLA. By the middle of the third quarter, UH cut the Bruins' lead to 6-4 following goals by junior
Monika Eggens and sophomore
Amarens Genee.
Orozco however, responded with another goal to bring the Bruins lead back to 7-4. In the final quarter, Genee's two goals brought the Rainbow Wahine close to stealing the lead, 7-6, but the Bruins held on to take the victory.
The Rainbow Wahine were led by Eggens and Genee, who both had three goals each, while Priscilla Orozco scored four for UCLA.
UH ended the first period against Indiana with a strong, 4-2 lead, but were kept silent in the second quarter while the Hoosiers scored one more goal to cut the Rainbow Wahine's lead to 4-3 for halftime.
The Rainbow Wahine shut out the Hoosiers in the second half, putting in three more goals to take the match 8-3.
Eggens and Genee, both scoring two goals each, led a rounded offense for the Rainbow Wahine. For Indiana, Lauren Wycoff led the team with two goals as well.
UH will continue the Stanford Invitational tomorrow as they face No. 2 USC at 9:00 a.m. PT. Their final opponent will be determined following the result of the USC match.
