SAN JOSE, Calif. – The No. 5 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team (1-0, 1-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) defeated San Jose State, 12-9 on Thursday afternoon, grabbing its first victory of the season in conference play.

Monika Eggens muscled in the first goal of the match just under seven minutes into the first quarter. UH scored three more unanswered goals to lead 4-0 over the Spartans until SJSU's Timi Molnar found the net with 2:29 left to play. With under a minute left however, Eggens put in another goal, giving UH a 5-1 lead at first quarter.
In the second quarter, Molnar pulled off a power play goal for the Spartans with under five minutes of play left. UH was quick to answer back when senior
Leonie Van Der Molen also scored off a power play within the same minute. The Rainbow Wahine scored two more unanswered goals until Molnar sunk in a penalty shot for SJSU with 1:56 on the clock, bringing the score to 8-3. With 58 seconds left in the second quarter, senior
Dagmar Genee answered back for UH, shutting out the Spartans 9-3 to finish the first half.
The Spartans scored another power play goal to begin the third quarter, bringing the score to 9-4. UH remained silent for most of the period until sophomore
Amarens Genee scored for UH off a power play. With just 10 seconds left, SJSU's Dani Curran scored for the Spartans, but
Monika Eggens put in the last word, sinking a buzzer shot to end the third quarter with a 12-5 lead.
The Spartans dominated the final quarter, shutting UH out 4-0. Moltar led SJSU, scoring three of the Spartan's four goals, but couldn't catch up in time. The Rainbow Wahine held onto the lead until end of the match, defeating San Jose State 12-9.
Monika Eggens and Van Der Molen each performed a hat trick to lead the Rainbow Wahine. Molnar led the Spartans scoring six of the team's nine goals.
Next, UH will play four games at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif. The Rainbow Wahine will face No. 4 UCLA at 12:00 p.m. PT and No. 13 Indiana at 5:00 p.m. PT on Saturday, Feb. 5 and No. 2 USC at 9:15 a.m. PT on Sunday, Feb. 6. UH will play its final match of the invitational based on their record during the tournament.
