NAMPA, Idaho – The University of Hawai'i track and field team finished the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships in seventh place, Saturday at Jackson's Track.
The Rainbow Wahine captured two more medals on the meet's final day as senior
Ashley Aitken and junior
Madara Apine won bronze and silver in the 800-meters and triple jump, respectively.
Aitken qualified for the 800m finals with a personal best in prelims on Friday and set a new mark of 2:12.97 on Saturday. The Napier, New Zealand native also placed fifth in the 3,000-meter run with another personal best time of 9:57.08.
In the triple jump, Apine fell two inches from winning gold with a mark of 39-11.25 (12.17m). It marks the second straight year Apine captured WAC silver and extended UH's streak of winning silver medals in the event to four straight years. Freshman
Amanda Alvarez also scored team points for UH with an eighth place finish at 37-3 (11.35m).
In the shot put event, junior
TeRina Keenan threw a personal best 43-3.75 (13.20m) and placed seventh.
Louisiana Tech narrowly beat out Utah State for its sixth straight WAC championship. The Lady Techsters scored 133 points to the Aggies' 132. Nevada placed third (88) followed by Boise State (80), New Mexico State (67.5), Fresno State (67), UH (48.5), and Idaho (44).
“All in all, the team did well considering that we were predicted to score only 37 points,” said head coach
Carmyn James. “We achieved 48.5 points. If not for points and personal bests, we were competing with pride.”
The Rainbow Wahine will next prepare for the start of the outdoor season which begins with the Sunset Meet #4, March 19.
