Water Polo Upsets Third-Ranked UCLA 8-6 In Overtime

LOS ANGELES – The No. 5 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team defeated No. 3 UCLA, 8-6 Thursday evening at the Spieker Aquatics Center in overtime. UH improves to a 4-2 record and remains undefeated, 2-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. 

UH opened the match strong, assuming a 2-0 run over the Bruins (13-2, 0-1 MPSF) with 2:39 to play in the opening quarter with goals by junior Monika Eggens (6:08) and senior Dagmar Genee (2:39).
 
UCLA answered back with 53 seconds left in the first quarter when Leah Trella scored a power play goal, but still the Bruins still trailed 2-1 entering the second quarter.
 
The Bruins came back in the second quarter, earning a 3-2 advantage with goals from Priscilla Orozco and Greenwood, but the Rainbow Wahine tied the score at 3-3 with 33 seconds to play before halftime on a goal by senior Leonie Van Der Molen.
 
UCLA's Sarah Orozco scored with two seconds left in the second quarter however, giving the Bruins a 4-3 halftime advantage.
 
The Rainbow Wahine grabbed the lead back 5-4 in the third quarter, putting in two goals from senior Carmen Eggens (3:28) and Dagmar Genee (3:28) while keeping the Bruins silent.
 
With 7:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, UCLA tied the game 5-5. After Greenwood scored with 59 seconds left, the Bruins earned a 6-5 advantage. UH came back to tie the match however, after Genee found the net with 21 seconds left in regulation.
 
In the first overtime period, Carmen Eggens scored the game-winning goal with 36 seconds left for a 7-6 lead. After sophomore Amarens Genee scored on a power-play goal with 2:10 left to play, UH held on for a 8-6 victory over the Bruins.
 
Senior Carmen Eggens led the Rainbow Wahine with three goals while Emily Greenwood led the Bruins with two goals.

UH sees action next at the UC Irvine Invitational from Feb. 26-27 in Irvine, Calif. They will face No. 12 Cal State Northridge at 12:45 p.m. PT at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. The three remaining matches are to be determined.
