Match Notes

The 10th-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team, winners of four of its last five matches, embarks on an eight-day, four-match Mountain Pacific Sports Federation road trip beginning with UCLA for a two-match series Thursday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 19 in Westwood, Calif. Match times are 7:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT) at Pauley Pavilion.

 

The Warriors (5-6, 3-3 MPSF) are coming off their first series sweep of the season, having defeating California Baptist in straight sets in Honolulu and four-sets the following night in Wailuku Maui. All-American opposite Jonas Umlauft led the way for UH, averaging 5.43 kills per set on .397 hitting. He blasted 18 kills and hit for a career-high .600 on Friday and followed with his sixth 20-kill match of the season the next night on Maui.

 

Fellow All-American Joshua Walker hit a blistering .489 during the series with a 3.86 kill average. Middle blockers Brennon Dyer and Jarrod Lofy combined for 20 kills and .559 hitting during the series.

 

No. 7 UCLA (7-7, 2-6) has lost its last five matches, which includes series sweeps by Brigham Young and UC Santa Barbara in consecutive weeks. The Bruins started the season 6-1, including three wins in the Outrigger Invitational tournament last month, but have since lost six of their last seven matches.

 

UC Irvine (6-8, 3-5) has lost four of its last six matches all of which occurred on the road. The Anteaters will host Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge this week, prior to the UH series.

Series vs. UCLA: UCLA has a dominant 55-19 advantage over Hawai'i in the all-time series, with a current six-match win streak, including a straight set win in the Outrigger Hotels Invitational last month in Honolulu. UCLA swept the season series last year, winning both matches in four sets at the Stan Sheriff Center.
