Men’s Basketball Falters At Pacific

Box Score

STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team dropped its second straight road game with a 64-54 loss to Pacific Tuesday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 2-4 with their fourth loss in their last five games.

Kahlil Kelley notched a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Tigers (4-3), who avenged a 75-70 loss to the Rainbow Warriors on Nov. 25. Kelley went a perfect 7-of-7 from the field and helped the Tiger pull away in the second half.

The game was tight with UH trailing just 48-46 with just under nine minutes left. But Pacific broke open the game with a 10-0 run capped by a Markus Duran three-pointer with 6:08 remaining. That shot gave the Tigers its biggest lead of the game, 58-46, and UH would not recover.

UH went nearly five minutes without a field goal during that decisive stretch as the Rainbow Warriors tied its season low with 54 points. UH went perfect from the free throw line (12-12) but managed to shoot just 35 percent from the floor, including 2-of-16 from three-point territory.

Joston Thomas led UH with 11 points, while Vander Joaquim came off the bench to add 10 points and six rebounds for the 'Bows. Leading scorer Zane Johnson had another rough outing, scoring just nine points for the second straight game on 2-of-10 shooting.

The game was back and forth in the first half. UH held a 21-20 lead, but the Tigers scored nine unanswered points and eventually took a 29-25 lead at half. After converting on just 3-of-18 three-pointers in the first half, Pacific warmed up after the break, nailing four of its first six attempts from behind the arc. UOP opened up a nine-point lead in the opening minutes of the second half, before UH cut the lead to 48-46. That would be as close as UH would get in the second half, as UOP failed to relinquish its lead.

After splitting a pair of games this year, the teams will meet again next year as conference rivals when UH joins the Big West in 2012.

Hawai'i now returns home to face its second Big West foe this week as the 'Bows host UC Davis on Sunday, Dec. 11. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center
