HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team suffered a rare home loss with a 89-72 setback to Eastern Washington Tuesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH dropped to 1-2 on the season with its second straight loss.
The Eagles (2-2), who held second half-leads in previous losses at nationally ranked Gonzaga and Oregon, were finally able to breakthrough, though at the expense of the Rainbow Warriors.Colin Chiverton led four Eagles in double figures with 20 points.
Zane Johnson scored a team-high 14 points for the 'Bows, with all but two of those points coming in the second half.
Vander Joaquim posted 12 points and seven rebounds, while
Trevor Wiseman also added 12 points.
Shaquille Stokes and
Joston Thomas scored 10 points each.
UH held the lead for most of the first half, but the Eagles used a decisive 25-5 run during 10-minute span in the first and second halves to surge ahead and never look back. The Eagles were near perfect from the free throw line, converting on 24-of-26 attempts (92 percent) and out-rebounded the Rainbow Warriors, 34-30.
UH started out hot, jumping out to a 9-2 lead and leading for the the first 17 minutes of the game. The 'Bows held on to a 27-21 lead with five minutes left in the half, however the Eagles closed with a 12-2 run to take a 33-29 lead into the locker room.
Eastern Washington stayed hot in the second half and built its lead to 18 on a Chiverton three-pointer with just under eight minutes left. The 'Bows would get no closer than 12 points as the Eagles staved off UH's repeated rally attempts with timely three-pointers and dead accurate free throw shooting. Eastern Washington hit 57 percent of its shots after the break, including 5-of-12 three-pointers.
The loss was just the sixth at home for the 'Bows in 21 games under head coach
Gib Arnold. UH looks to rebound in its second straight home game when they face Pacific on Friday, Nov. 25. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
