Men’s Volleyball Falls In Five To UCSD

Box Score

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team's five-set woes continued this season falling to No. 15 UC San Diego, Friday night, at RIMAC Arena. Set scores for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match were 25-23, 16-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-8.

The Warriors (1-5, 1-2 MPSF) fell to 0-3 in five-set matches this season and dropped their third straight match to the Tritons in La Jolla, Calif., despite dominating the series 41-3.

UH's Jonas Umlauft led all attackers with 27 kills on .316 hitting. The super sophomore has four 20-kill matches this season and has 78 kills in his last three outings. Outside hitter Joshua Walker added 12 kills and nine digs while Steve Hunt finished with 11 kills, nine digs, and four blocks.

Statistically, Hawai'i dominated the stat sheet with advantages in hitting (.325 to .266), digs (44 to 35), and blocks (12.5 to 10). Calvin Ross led the Tritons (4-5, 2-2) with 17 kills while Carl Eberts added 13 kills.

After dropping the first set, the Warriors regrouped in Set 2 jumping out to a 6-3 lead. UH led 16-13 before closing out the game with a 9-3 run, highlighted by three of Umlauft's seven kills in the set.

Set 3 was close for much of the way until the Warriors grabbed a four point lead at 22-18 after consecutive hitting errors by UCSD's Nick Iorfino. Leading 22-20, UH scored three straight, including consecutive Triton hitting errors to end it.

The Tritons broke ahead 9-6 after a four-point run to start Set 4. The teams traded leads until a UCSD hitting error gave UH a 22-20 lead. The Tritons tied it at 22 and served for the set at 24-23 after a block of Walker. Ross ended it with a kill down the middle.

Set 5 was all Tritons early on. UCSD led 6-2 before the Warriors inched their way back. Consecutive kills by Hunt and Umlauft pulled UH to within 7-5 before the Tritons extended their lead to 10-6 after an ace by Sebastian Brady and kills by Phil Brannan and Ross. UCSD finished off the match anticlimactically after Nejc Zemljak stepped on the service line on his serve.

The two teams play again on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT) at RIMAC Arena. The match can be heard on ESPN 1420AM with Blaine Kauwe calling the action.
