No. 9 UCLA Defeats Hawai`i in Hilo, 72-44

HILO, Hawai`i—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (4-5) fell to No. 9 UCLA (9-0), 44-72 in the opening game of the 2010 Chevron Rainbow Wahine Shootout held at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo, Hawai`i. Senior guard Keisha Kanekoa scored a game-high 16 points in her return to her native Big Island on Sunday night.
 
Kanekoa hit two 3-pointers and was 8-for-10 from the free-throw line with a team-high four assists to go with one rebound and one steal. Two other Rainbow Wahine posted double-figures in points. Freshman forward, Kamilah Jackson had another strong outing, but saw her five-game double-double streak come to an end tonight after scoring 10 points and securing a team-high eight rebounds. Reserve junior center, Rebecca Dew came off the bench to tally a season-high 10 points. She was 3-of-5 from the floor and 4-for-4 at the charity stripe. She also grabbed two rebounds for UH in her highest minute total of the season (21).
 
The Bruins' stifling defense forced UH to score a season-low 44 points and into a season-high 31 turnovers which UCLA converted into 22 points. UCLA's bench outscored UH's reserves, 43-14.
 
The 'Bows trailed at the half, 31-22, with Kanekoa leading the team with eight points and four assists. Dew tallied six points and Kamilah Jackson scored four points with four rebounds and a steal. UH trailed by as many as 14 points midway through the half, but rallied late to trim their deficit to five points before UCLA drained four free throws in the waning minutes.
 
UCLA was led by Nina Earl who did a little of everything. Earl had a team-high 14 points with six rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal. Doreena Campbell and Jasmine Dixon both chipped in with 10 points a piece. Dixon had a team-high seven rebounds.
 
The Chevron Rainbow Wahine Shootout continues on Monday, with UCLA taking on East Carolina from Conference USA at 7:00 pm. Hawai`i concludes the tournament on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. against East Carolina.
