SEATTLE – The University of Hawai'i Warrior football team jumped out to a huge lead and never looked back in a 38-20 win over Washington State Saturday afternoon at Qwest Field. Playing the first of three straight road games, the Warriors got off on the right foot by defeating a BCS team on the road for the first time in seven tries.
UH benefitted from five Cougar turnovers in the first half and generated big play after big play in taking a 35-0 lead barely five minutes into the second quarter. The Warriors led 35-6 at halftime and the Cougars never got closer than 15 points thereafter.
The UH offense exploded for 349 yards of offense in the first half alone. Meanwhile, the UH defense was just as active, forcing three fumbles and two interceptions and allowed just six first-half points by the Cougars. By the time the game was over, UH piled up 626 yards of offense, its most since its 2006 Hawai'i Bowl win over Arizona State, and defensively forced seven Cougar turnovers.
Greg Alexander finished with a career-high 453 yards and three touchdowns.
Greg Salas and
Rodney Bradley, meanwhile, were absolutely unstoppable, combing for 345 of those yards. Salas hauled in seven catches for a career-high 195 yards and a touchdown, while Bradley tallied seven catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
Junior safety
Mana Silva picked off two passes, while sophomore linebacker
Corey Paredes tallied eight tackles, a sack and two forced fumbles.
UH (2-0) came out of the gates strong, marching 80 yards on just six plays in its opening drive. Bradley accounted for 43 yards of the drive, including a 23-yard touchdown catch from Alexander to put the Warriors up, 7-0.
UH's second drive was even more efficient as its first. UH scored in four plays with Salas accounting for all of the offense. Salas caught three balls for 61 yards and stretched for a 7-yard score and an early 14-0 lead.
After UH recovered a fumble in Cougar territory,
Leon Wright-Jackson took a 2-yard scoring plunge that put UH up 21-0. The big plays kept coming in the second quarter as Bradley burst for a 73-yard catch and run and
Alex Green rambled for a 44-yard rushing touchdown to extend the UH lead to 35-0 with more than 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The Warriors scored 21 of its points off of WSU (0-2) turnovers.
Washington State showed signs of life in the second half and after a pair of touchdowns, cut the UH lead to 35-20. But it was too little, too late as the Warriors defeated the Cougars for the second straight year.
UH will remain on the mainland to get ready for the second of three straight road games as the Warriors travel to Las Vegas to take on UNLV on Saturday, Sept. 19. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT).
