STANFORD, Calif. – In a dramatic season opener that nearly rewrote the school record books, the University of Hawai'i football team fell just short, dropping a 37-27 decision to Stanford on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Stadium.

Faced with a 16-point deficit entering the fourth quarter, the Rainbow Warriors (0-1) erupted for 20 unanswered points to capture their first lead of the game, 27-23. However, a late Stanford touchdown and a defensive score in the final two minutes enabled the Cardinal (1-0) to escape with the victory.

Sophomore quarterback Micah Alejado finished 30-of-50 for 269 yards and two touchdowns to spark the furious fourth-quarter rally. Twelve different receivers caught a pass for the Rainbow Warriors as Alejado utilized a dynamic, spread-the-wealth passing attack.

Alejado's counterpart Davis Warren also had a strong performance, going 22-of-34 for 310 yards, while directing the game-winning drive in the final minutes. Micah Ford spearhead the Cardinal ground attack with 99 yards and three touchdowns. 

The game did not start smoothly for Hawaii, which trailed 14-7 at halftime. The Cardinal built momentum with a 2-yard touchdown plunge by Micah Ford on Stanford's second possession of the game. The Bows responded early in the second quarter when Kansas State transfer DeVon Rice scored the first touchdown of Hawaii's 2026 campaign, punching in a 3-yard run on a jet sweep. 

But Stanford answered right back with a 6-yard scoring pass from Davis Warren to Atticus Joseph to go up 14-7. That would be the score at the break as UH stayed in the game with a pair of defensive stops late in the second quarter despite being out-gained 257-81 in the first half. 

Stanford early in the second half. A blocked punt by Charlie Eckhardt rolled out of bounds for a safety, extending the Cardinal lead to 16-7. After a UH free kick, Stanford capitalized on the ensuing possession as Ford plunged in for another 2-yard score, giving the hosts a commanding 23-7 lead.

Hawaii however refused to back down and a UH offense that had five straight three-and-outs shifted the momentum heavily going into the final period. The 'Bows embarked on a 16-play, 80-yard drive that ate up over five minutes of clock. On fourth-and-1 from the Stanford 5-yard line, sophomore running back Sitane Mikaele broke loose for a 5-yard touchdown run—the first of his career. Tama Uiliata ran in a critical two-point conversion to trim the deficit to 23-15.

The Hawai'i defense quickly forced a three-and-out, and the offense went back to work. Covering 63 yards in just five plays, Alejado found Uiliata for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Uiliata enjoyed a career afternoon with a team-high eight receptions for 62 yards and his first collegiate touchdown. Though the two-point conversion failed, Hawaii trailed by just two, 23-21, with 9:39 left.

After another defensive stand, Alejado masterfully engineered a 9-play, 90-yard drive. Facing second-and-13 from the Stanford 29, Alejado launched a strike to Rice, who scampered into the end zone for a a go-ahead score that put UH up 27-23 with 4:06 left. Rice shined in his Rainbow Warrior debut, scoring both on the ground and through the air. 

Stanford, however, had one final answer. Davis Warren directed a 7-play, 62-yard drive, culminated by Ford's third 2-yard touchdown run of the day to make it 30-27 with 1:41 on the clock. With Hawaii pushing to tie or win, the comeback bid officially ended when Stanford's Tevarua Tafiti recovered a fumble and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown with 1:12 remaining to secure the final margin.

On defense, junior safety Kona Moore was a force for UH, racking up a career-high 14 tackles, including 2.0 tackles-for-loss. Senior safety Matagi Thompson also established a career-best with eight tackles. 

The Rainbow Warriors now open their home schedule with a huge early-season Mountain West matchup versus UNLV on Saturday, Sept. 5. Kickoff is 4:00 p.m. at the Ching Complex.
