HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Championship and will face Loyola Marymount in the opening round on Friday, May 8 at the Eppley Recreation Center, in College Park, Maryland. The Rainbow Wahine will be making their third NCAA Championship under head coach Michel Roy.
UH went 2-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship and finished in fifth place. The Rainbow Wahine were selected as the No. 4 seed for the NCAA Championship, following the MPSF tournament. UH carries an 18-8 record into Maryland.
The Rainbow Wahine will face No. 5 seed Loyola Marymount on Friday, May 8 at 6:45 p.m. ET. The University of Maryland is hosting the 2009 NCAA Championship, in College Park. The Championship is set up just like the MPSF Championship, with an eight-team single elimination tournament, with a losers' bracket to determine places three through eight.
UH will be making its third appearance in the NCAA Championship, since the NCAA started recognizing the sport in 2001. The Rainbow Wahine made the tournament in 2005 and 2006, both under coach Roy.
