HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team beat Pacific, 3-1, on Friday night in the first match of a two-match series at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Warriors split the first two sets before taking the final two after the break.
With the win, UH snaps a four-match losing streak and improves to 7-17 overall and 4-15 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. Pacific falls to 3-25 overall and 0-19 in conference action.
The Warriors were led by freshman
Steven Hunt, who recorded a match-high 25 kills and hit .425. Hunt also added two aces and six blocks.
In the first set, the Warriors fell behind 19-18, but found a spark and went on a 12-5 run to close out the first set 30-24. Hunt had six kills and hit .400 in the set and
Joseph Strotman had five kills. UH had 18 kills and hit .262 while recorded 5.5 blocks.
The Warriors fell behind early in the second set and couldn't catch up to the Tigers, losing 30-25. Hunt and Strotman each had four kills and Rawson added three kills. UH hit .333 in the second set, but Pacific hit .536 in the set.
UH went back-and-forth with Pacific in the third set, eventually taking a 22-20 lead, carrying the momentum to a 30-26 win. The Warriors hit .519 in the set and Hunt had six kills, while Strotman added four kills.
In the fourth set, UH led for most of the way and finished off Pacific with a 30-25 win. Hunt had nine kills in the set and the team hit .258, but held Pacific to .062.
UH wraps up the two-match series with Pacific on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
