No. 12 Men’s Volleyball Drops Match Against No. 8 UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team dropped the first match of a two-game series against UC San Diego, 3-1, on Friday night in La Jolla, Calif. The loss for UH is the first all-time against UC San Diego.
 
With the loss, No. 12 UH falls to 4-12 overall and 3-10 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action. No. 8 UC San Diego improves to 9-10 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
 
UH will face UC San Diego for the second match of the series on Saturday night at 7 p.m. PT.
 
UH led the series 39-0 before Friday's match. Last season, UCSD lost the two matches in four and five sets. The five-set match was the first in the series since 2000.
 
On Friday night, UH was led by Joshua Walker, who had 17 kills in four sets. Sean Carney added nine kills and six digs and Steven Grgas had seven kills and three blocks.
 
The Warriors dropped a tough first set, battling to a 34-32 loss. UC San Diego took the second set 30-23, before UH won the third set 30-25. UCSD went on to take the final set 30-19.
 
UC San Diego was led by Frank Fritsch, who recorded a match-high 33 kills and Jason Spangler added 16 kills.
