STANFORD, Calif. – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team took second place at the Stanford Invitational Sunday, after falling to top-ranked USC, 11-3, in the championship match. Earlier in the day, UH finished pool play undefeated after beating No. 7 San Jose State, 12-7.
In Game 9 of the tournament, the Rainbow Wahine consistently put up three goals in each quarter against San Jose State and held on for a clean 12-7 win. With the win, UH avenged a league loss to the Spartans earlier in the week.
However, when it came to the championship match against USC, Hawai'i's consistency seemed to sink. The Trojans kept UH scoreless in the first quarter and the Rainbow Wahine were not able to respond after that. Hawai'i only scored once in each quarter the rest of the way, while USC cruised to an 11-3 victory.
Sophomore Monika Eggens and junior Leonie van Der Molen led the Rainbow Wahine with four goals against San Jose State while senior Kelly Mason, #Eggens#, and junior Ryan Hanson-Swaner each contributed one goal in the loss to the Trojans.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Serena Bredin started both matches in goal posting eight saves against SJSU and seven against USC.
The Rainbow Wahine will have one week off before returning to southern California for an MPSF match against UCLA, Feb. 19, and the UC Irvine Tournament, Feb. 21-22.
