UH Drops Two Matches; Finishes Fourth At Irvine Tournament

IRVINE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team finished in fourth place at the Irvine Tournament after dropping two games Sunday at the Anteater Aquatic Complex. The third-ranked Rainbow Wahine lost to No. 2 Stanford, 11-10 and No. 4 UCLA, 12-7.
 
Against Stanford, UH (8-6, 0-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) led after the first quarter 5-4. However, the Cardinal held the Rainbow Wahine to one goal in the second and took a 7-6 lead at the half. UH answered back with two goals in the third period and evened the score at 8-8.
 
In the final quarter, Stanford pulled away, outscoring the Rainbow Wahine, 3-2 and taking the match 11-10. With the win, the Cardinal advanced to the championship match while UH was sent to the third place game. Senior Lisa van Raalte led Hawai'i with three goals.
 
In the tournament's third-place match, UCLA kept UH scoreless in the first quarter and managed to hold the Rainbow Wahine to only two goals by halftime where the Bruins led 7-2. UH scored five goals in the second half and held UCLA to no goals in the final period but were still unable to recover for a victory and lost by a five-point margin, 12-7.
 
Senior Kelly Mason, junior Ryan Hanson-Swaner and freshman Monika Eggens all contributed two goals each for the Rainbow Wahine.
 
UH will take the next 17 days off before hosting Arizona State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Duke Kahanumoku Aquatic Complex. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
