IRVINE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team picked up two wins on the opening day of the UC Irvine Tournament Saturday at the Anteater Aquatic Complex. The third-ranked Rainbow Wahine defeated No.13 Cal State Northridge, 14-10 and No. 5 San Diego State, 9-5.
Against CSUN, UH (8-4, 0-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) lagged one point behind the Matadors after the first quarter, but were able to rally for an 8-7 halftime lead. After holding Northridge to one goal in the third, Hawai'i held off the Matadors in the final period for a 9-5 victory. Senior
Kelly Mason matched her season-high with six goals.
In their second match of the tournament, the Rainbow Wahine came out strong, keeping SDSU scoreless after the first period. Although the Aztecs fought back in the second, UH managed to hold on for a 3-2 lead at the half. The Rainbow Wahine again held SDSU to just one goal in the third and kept the Aztecs under control outscoring them 14-10 for the match. Junior
Leonie van Der Molen led Hawai'i with three of UH's nine goals.
The Rainbow Wahine conclude the tournament Sunday morning, against No. 2 Stanford.
