LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The third-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team suffered an 11-8 loss to No. 4 UCLA, Thursday, at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The Rainbow Wahine dropped their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match of the season and are now 6-4 overall.
After taking a 6-5 lead on the Bruins into halftime, the Rainbow Wahine were edged out by the home team in the third quarter by a 5-0 score.
The Rainbow Wahine, who defeated the Bruins (8-2, 2-0 MPSF) for the first time ever two weeks ago, fell short in the last two quarters. UH came out strong in the first half, leading, 3-2 after the first quarter and 6-5 at the half.
However, the Bruins cut Hawai'i's lead in the third, and led 10-6 heading into the final period. The lead proved too large for the Rainbow Wahine who still managed to outscore the Bruins 2-1 in the fourth but fall short 11-8.
Leading the Rainbow Wahine were sophomore
Carmen Eggens and junior
Dagmar Genee, who each posted a hat trick. On the other side, sophomore Priscilla Orozco scored three of the 11 goals for the Bruins.
Hawai'i continues its road trip with the Irvine Tournament on Feb. 21. The Rainbow Wahine begin the tournament facing off against No. 13 Cal State Northridge at 11:30 a.m. PST.
