Oregon Edges Out Hawai‘i Softball, 3-2

Box Score
Stephanie Ricketts pitch Oregon

HENDERSON, Nev. - The University of Hawai'i softball team (1-7) was edged out by Oregon, 3-2, at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic held at the Stephanie Lynn Craig softball complex Saturday afternoon.

For Hawai'i, freshman Stephanie Ricketts made her first collegiate start on the mound. She fired a complete game, giving up three runs on six hits with three walks and six strike outs. Only one run was earned. Ricketts faced a hot Ducks offense, with nine of its players hitting over .300 thus far this season.

Oregon's Sam Skillingstad also threw a complete game, giving up two runs on three hits with three walks and seven strike outs.

The Ducks got on the scoreboard first, posting a run in the top of the second on a home run by K Chambers over the centerfield fence.

Hawai'i answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, getting a home run of their own off the bat of Amanda Tauali'i to rightfield. The 'Bows then took the lead, 2-1, on a home run in the bottom of the third by Tanisha Milca to centerfield.

The score remained the same until the top of the sixth, when Oregon broke through with two runs to overtake UH, 3-2. Vitek led the inning off with a double down the leftfield line. Barril then entered as a pinch runner at second. Chambers then hit a deep fly to the rightfield warning track, but the ball bounced off the glove of the rightfielder. Barril, who was tagging at second, then raced around to score when the relay throw ricocheted of her helmet. The ball caromed off the backstop, allowing Chambers to come all the way around to score what proved to be the winning run.

Hawai`i will now travel across town to Eller Media Stadium to face Saint Louis at approximately 8:15 pm.
