HONOLULU – The University of Hawaii Rainbow Warrior basketball team dropped its second straight game with a 83-65 loss to BYU in a non-conference matchup Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Hiram Thompson led UH with 15 points in the loss.
In their first meeting since there since they were Western Athletic Conference rivals 10 years ago, the Cougars (3-0) took a 10-point lead over the 'Bows (2-2) at the break then put the game away with a decisive second-half run.
Thompson led four UH players in double digits.
Petras Balocka recorded his fourth career double-double and first of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Roderick Flemings chipped in 12 points, while
Adhar Mayen added 11. Meanwhile, it was a rough night for top scorer
Dwain Williams (17.7 ppg) who was held scoreless on 0-5 shooting in 26 minutes of action.
Jimmer Fredette, the Mountain West Conference Preseason Player of the Year, led BYU with 20 points and eight assists.
For the second straight game the 'Bows suffered a costly second-half lapse. It was just a five-point game early in the second half, but BYU went on a 13-0 run to take a 56-38 lead. The 'Bows would get no closer than 15 points after that point as the Cougars built their lead to as many as 22 points.
The Cougars shot 56 percent for the game, while holding UH to just 31 percent shooting after the break. Turnovers also proved to be UH's demise as the 'Bows turned the ball over a season high 20 times, leading to 32 points for BYU. UH out-rebounded the Cougars, 37-27, and the 'Bows collected 19 offensive rebounds. But UH couldn't capitalize as the Cougars out-scored UH, 13-10 on second-chance points.
UH next faces its second straight Mountain West Conference opponent when it hosts New Mexico on Friday, Nov. 27. Tipoff is set for 8:05 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
