HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team opened tournament play against Brigham Young University today at the UH Tennis Complex. Today was the first day of the three-day round-robin tournament which consisted of both singles and doubles action.
Rosenberg, the lone winner in singles action, defeated Evan Urbina in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. Rosenberg is also coming off 6-4, 6-3 straight set win over Daniel Luedi on Oct.25th to win the Honolulu Masters Open and automatic wildcard into the Honolulu Pro Challenger, a USTA event to be held in January.
Weber, ranked No.119 by the ITA tennis preseason rankings lost in three sets to Thomas Shubert, 6-1, 2-6,7-5. Tweedt, Eberhard and Kovalyov all lost their matches in straight sets. Tweedt was defeated by BYU captian Cassidy Mears 6-3,6-3. Eberhard lost to George Butraskov 6-0,6-3 and Kovalyov was defeated by Spencer Smith 6-0,6-3. Faulk lost his match to Daniel Hwang 6-0, 6-0 and Rubin was defeated by Michael Braso 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles action, the teams of Weber/Rosenberg, Tweedt/Llarenas, Eberhard/Faulk and Rubin/Kovalyov competed. Weber/Rosenberg defeated the team Mears and Shubert 8-3. Eberhard/Faulk lost to the team of Bustrakov and Hwang 8-6. Tweedt/Llarenas were defeated by Smith and Urbina 8-3 and Rubin/Kovalyov lost to the team of Campos and Warias 8-4.
The second day of the round-robin tournament will begin tomorrow at UH Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m.
