Game Notes
The University of Hawai'i Warrior football team will make its fourth trip to the continent when it plays Nevada, Saturday, Oct. 31 in a Western Athletic Conference match-up. Kickoff is 1:05 p.m. (10:05 a.m. HT) at Mackay Stadium.
The Warriors (2-5, 0-4 WAC) have dropped their last five games, including last week's 54-9 loss to then-No. 6 Boise State at Aloha Stadium. The five-game losing streak is the longest since 1998, which is also the last time UH started 0-4 in WAC play.
In the loss, the Warriors got stung by the injury bug once again, as quarterback
Bryant Moniz was knocked out the game in the first quarter. Sophomore
Shane Austin finished the game and threw for 174 yards and one touchdown. This season, three UH quarterbacks have missed games due to injury, including
Greg Alexander, the team's No. 1 signal caller, who suffered a season-ending knee injury several weeks ago.
On the flip side, Nevada (4-3, 3-0) has won four straight since starting the season 0-3. The Wolf Pack are coming off a 70-45 rout of league-leader Idaho last week in Reno. Nevada rushed for 488 yards and amassed 662 yards of total offense. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick rushed for 230 yards and four touchdowns while passing for another 178 yards and two scores.
Both UH and Nevada possess potent offenses with the Wolf Pack leading the country in rushing offense (320.1 yards per game), while the Warriors are No. 3 in passing offense (348.9). Nevada is also second nationally in total offense (505.6) while UH ranks 26th (423.7). The Wolf Pack average 35.1 points per game, which is 10th nationally.
Hawai'i and Nevada have met 14 previous times with the Warriors holding a slight 7-6 edge. The last two games in the series have come down to the final seconds. Last season, Alexander found
Malcolm Lane in the end zone with 20 seconds remaining as the Warriors won 38-31. In 2007, UH kicker
Dan Kelly booted the game-winning field goal with 11 seconds remaining for a 28-26 Hawai'i victory in Reno.
