RUSTON, La. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (29-31) ended their season with a loss to the Nevada Wolf Pack (34-25) 12-7 in an elimination game in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Pat Patterson Park at J.C. Love Field Saturday.
Josh Slaats (0-5) took the loss for the 'Bows while Brock Stassi (4-2) got the win for Nevada.
Brandon Haislet ended his career as a Rainbow with a bang, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run. Landon Hernandez hit a home run while Vinnie Catricala added a 1-for-3 game with two RBI and a double.
The Wolf Pack struck first, posting five runs, all coming with two outs, in the second inning to jump ahead 5-0. The Rainbows would put up a single run in the bottom of the second before Nevada scored another in the top of the third, making it 6-1.
Hernandez led off the bottom of the third inning with his second home run of the tournament, a monster shot that hit the student dormitory in leftfield. Catricala then drove a RBI-double to right-center to score another run for the 'Bows in the fourth, pulling the deficit to 6-3.
Nevada then added a four-run inning in the fifth, aided by three Rainbow walks, and a two-run home run by David Ciarlo in the top of the sixth, pushing the Pack lead to 12-3.
Haislet and Van Doornum drove in runs on back-to-back RBI-singles in the bottom of the eighth to cut it back to 12-5. Senior Evan Zimny would hit a RBI-single in his final at bat as a Rainbow with Haislet following with a RBI-double to get Hawai`i to cut it to 12-7 before Kamehameha graduate Waylen Sing Chow caught Jeffrey Van Doornum's fly ball to right, ending the season for the 'Bows.
Hawai`i ends the year with a record of 29-31, the sixth-straight year with 28-plus victories. The loss also ends the collegiate careers of Ryan Asato, Derek DuPree, Haislet, Jonathan Hee, Cory Kahn, Nicholas Rhodes, Joshua Schneider, Cameron Wheeler and Zimny.
