HONOLULU - The No. 13 University of Hawai`i men's volleyball (10-15, 7-13 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) fell in three-sets, 31-29, 30-19, 30-24, against the No. 3 Brigham Young Cougars (21-4, 16-4 MPSF) Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Senior Jacob Schkud was honored following the match during the traditional "Senior Night" festivities. Schkud, a four-year letterwinner from Santa Monica, Calif., served as co-captain this season in which he led the team in services aces and was second in kills.
Freshman Joshua Walker led the team in kills for the second straight night with 10. Schkud was second on the squad with eight. Junior Sean Carney had a match-high 32 assists for UH.
The Warriors had a chance to stun the Cougars in the first set but lost 31-29. UH was leading by five, 21-16, but BYU tied it up at 24 off a Warrior attack error. UH then found themselves in position to take the first game when a Nemanja Komar kill gave them game point at 29-28. However, the Cougars tied it up and fended off the Warriors with two straight points to win it.
UH lost their energy in the second set and faced a large deficit early on. BYU jumped to a 10-4 lead and never looked back. BYU took the second stanza 30-19 and were up two games.
BYU dominated the third contest and took the match, 30-24. UH had got within three, 19-16, but the Cougars proved to be too much down the stretch. BYU extended their advantage to seven at 23-16 off a Ivan Perez kill. UH could not recover and now faces a four-match losing streak entering their last week of regular season action.
UH will hit the road next week to conclude its MPSF regular season against Pepperdine on April 11 and 12 with both matches starting at 7:00 p.m. (4:00 p.m. HST). UH is still fighting for the eighth playoff spot to make it into the MPSF postseason. The Warriors have made every postseason tournament since 1994 and have been omitted only once in Coach Mike Wilton's career (1993).
