SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The fifth-seeded University of Hawai`i women's water polo team placed fourth on the final day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship after losing 10-8 to No. 2 seed Stanford Sunday in the third place match at the Aztec Aquaplex. The Cardinal improved to 25-4, while the Rainbow Wahine drop to 20-10.
After a slow start in the first with the Cardinal scoring the only goal of the period, the Rainbow Wahine finally got on the scoreboard after Angela Turnbull scored on a six-on-five advantage in the second. Hawai`i continued to make a strong comeback with two more consecutive goals to give them a two-point lead. But Stanford managed three-straight goals, which left UH trailing 4-3 at the half.
Hawai`i's Lisa van Raalte opened the second half with a goal scored on a six-on-five advantage to tie match. The Rainbow Wahine and the Cardinal scored back and forth throughout the remainder of the third period, which ended with both teams tied at seven.
Turnbull scored her second goal of the match in the fourth, which turned out to be the last for the Rainbow Wahine, on a penalty shot to give them an 8-7 lead. Meanwhile, Stanford began to pull away after Lauren Silver, who scored a match-high three goals, found the net on a penalty shot. The Cardinal scored another two unanswered goals to give the team a 10-8 victory and a third place spot at the MPSF Championship.
The Rainbow Wahine will now await if they are one of three at-large teams who will earn a spot to the NCAA Championships.
