FRESNO, Calif. - No. 10 Fresno State completed a conference series sweep of No. 24 Hawai`i with a second, extra inning win of the day. The 'Bows lost 2-1 in eight innings in the second game of the doubleheader at Bulldog Diamond today. Both starting pitcher threw complete games with
Kate Robinson taking the loss and FSU's Morgan Melloh earning the win.
Hawai`i (33-17, 7-7 WAC) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Tanisha Milca scored on a sacrifice fly by Robinson to deep rightfield.
Fresno State had runners on in every inning except the seventh, including a bases loaded situation which the 'Bows were able to get out of. But in the sixth, the Bulldogs rallied with two outs to tie the game at 1-1. Nicole Angene started the rally with a single through the rightside of the infield. Melloh followed with a base hit through the leftside of the infield to put runners at first and second. Haley Perkins then laced a single to left that scored a hustling Angene from second. On the play, Mellow tried to advance to third on the throw home, but was cut down 7-to-6-to-2-to-5 to end the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Ashley White ripped a double down the rightfield line with one out. The next batter, Andrea Ortega came through with a single to right that scored pinch runner Mallory Perkins for the 2-1 win.
Robinson (14-6, 4-3 WAC) threw seven-plus innings, giving up two runs on 11 hits with a walk and two strike outs.
In the win, FSU's Melloh (33-5) gave up one run on six hits with a walk and seven strike outs.
For Hawai`i, it was the second extra inning loss to Fresno State of the day. All three losses were by one run. Hawai`i is now 0-3 in extra inning games after losing to St. Mary's, 4-2 in nine innings on March 21.
Hawai`i returns home tomorrow and will host Utah State in the regular season series finale May 3 and 4 both at 2:00 pm with a double header on Saturday. Fans will say aloha to five seniors who will be recognized after Sunday's game on senior day: Kaulana Gould, Jessica Morton, Valana Manuma, Brandi Peiler, and Kate Robinson.
