FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Jenna Cervantez hit a walk-off, solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the University of Hawai`i softball team, 3-2.
Courtney Baughman took the loss, throwing a complete game, while Fresno State reliever Ryane Petersen earned the win at Bulldog Diamond today.
Hawai`i (33-16, 7-6 WAC) took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning off back-to-back home runs by Clare Warwick and Valana Manuma. Both homers were over the right-centerfield fence. For Warwick, it was her fourth of the season and it was Manuma's first of the year.
The 'Bows held the lead through the first four innings, but in the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs knotted the game at 2-2 on a bases clearing double hit over the rightfielder by Petersen. Coming in on the play was Mallory Perkins from third and Andrea Ortega from second.
The score remained tied at 2-2 until the Cervantez launched the homer to left to end the game.
Baughman fired seven-plus innings in the loss, giving up three runs on 10 hits with eight strike outs and no outs. It was the longest outing of Baughman's career.
Fresno State starter Morgan Mellow lasted three-plus innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and four strike outs. Petersen threw the final five innings, scattering four hits and holding the 'Bows scoreless.
The two teams conclude the three-game series with the second game of today's doubleheader.
