'Bows Take First Half Of Doubleheader With 8-4 Win At Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (21-22, 13-9 WAC) beat the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (16-24, 2-18) 8-4 in the first game of the doubleheader at J.C. Love Field Saturday. Joshua Schneider (3-2) got the victory, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing just one run on four hits, while Matthew Daly pitched one no-hit inning to get the save. Jericho Jones (5-4) took the loss for Tech.

Vinnie Catricala was just one leg short of the cycle for the second-straight game, going 3-for-5 with two RBI, a home run and a double. Brandon Haislet added a 3-for-5 game with two runs while Jonathan Hee went 2-for-3 with two runs, one RBI and two walks. Jeffrey Van Doornum added a 2-for-5 game with two RBI and a double while Kevin Macdonald went 2-for-5 with one RBI and a run.

Hawai`i got their offense started early again, scoring two runs on a double down the line by Van Doornum, giving UH a 2-0 lead. Macdonald and Catricala then both drove in runs in the top of the third to get their lead to 4-0.

The Rainbows added two more runs in the top of the fourth, scoring on hits by Sean Montplaisir and Hee, getting the Hawai`i lead to 6-0. But the Bulldogs responded quickly, hitting back-to-back-to-back home runs, all solo shots to rightfield, bringing Tech back into the game at 6-3.

Catricala joined the home run parade in the top of the fifth inning, hitting a solo homer to left. Hee would later score on an error in the top of the sixth to increase UH's lead to 8-3.

Louisiana Tech added a run in the bottom of the sixth, cutting it back to 8-4. But that was all that Schneider would let up before giving way to Daly, who struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief to close the victory.

The second game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 4:20 p.m. (11:20 a.m. HST).
