Rainbow Wahine Edge SDSU 10-9 In MPSF Quarterfinals

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The fifth-seeded University of Hawai`i women's water polo team won its second match in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships with a 10-9 quarterfinal victory over No. 4 San Diego State Friday at the Aztec Aquaplex. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 20-8 overall and advances to the semifinals against top-seeded UCLA on Saturday.

The Rainbow Wahine avenged a 10-7 loss to the Aztecs in their last meeting on April 4 also in San Diego, Calif.

After two consecutive goals by SDSU in the first, UH's Saara Majuri and Lisa van Raalte answered back to tie the score at two. The Rainbow Wahine went on to score three goals in the second, two of which were on six-on-five advantages, to give the team a two-point lead. But a late goal by SDSU's Anna Gonzales narrowed the score to 5-4 at the half.

Hawai`i's Angela Turnbull scored the first goal of the second half, giving UH a 6-4 lead. Kelly Mason also scored a second consecutive goal on a six-on-five advantage for the Rainbow Wahine. Goalie Serena Bredin held SDSU to one goal in the third.

UH's Leonie Van Der Molen scored her second goal of the match in the fourth. van Raalte also found the net for a third time with 44 seconds left to give the Hawai`i a 10-8 lead. SDSU's Gonzales scored the final goal of the match with less than 30 seconds left, but it wouldn't be enough to stop the Rainbow Wahine from clinching a 10-9 victory.

The UH-UCLA match is slated for 2:50 p.m. PDT (11:50 a.m HT). Hawai`i suffered a 9-5 loss to the undefeated Bruins in their last meeting on March 28.
