Rainbow Wahine Drop Back To Third Place Finish At WAC Championships

FRESNO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine golf team (301-302-314-917) fell to a third-placed finish at the Western Athletic Conference Championships at the Sunnyville Country Club Wednesday. Also announced at the tournament were the 2007-08 awards with Xyra Suyetsugu earning first-team all-WAC honors.

Corie Hou (72-73-79-224) was UH's top finisher, tying for fourth, individually. Suyetsugu (75-79-76-230) finished tied for 11th, followed by Lisa Kajihara (76-81-78-235), in 17th place, Phyllis Lai (78-77-81-236), tied for 18th, and Carolina Perez (84-73-83-240), tied for 28th.

Fresno State (+41) shot the best round of the tournament, at 295 in round three, to win the WAC title and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional. New Mexico State (+48) finished second, followed by UH (+53), San Jose State (+56), Idaho (+59), Boise State (+69) and Nevada (+82).

Fresno State's Laura Luethke won the individual title at four-over-par. New Mexico State's Suteera Chanachai (+6) finished second, followed by NMSU's Brittany Collins (+7) and Hou, San Jose State's Cristina Corpus and Erica Moston and Idaho's Kelly Nakashima (+8), all tying for fourth.

The third-placed finish ties UH's best-ever finish at the WAC Tournament, along with their performance in last year's conference championship.
