HONOLULU - The No. 20/16 University of Hawai`i softball team (31-11, 7-1 WAC) defeated San Jose State, 3-1 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Junior pitcher
Courtney Baughman (13-6, 2-0 WAC) won the game, giving up one run on five hits with two walks and four strike outs. SJSU's Roxanne Bejarano (6-11) took the loss, throwing 6.0 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits with three strike outs.
Hawai`i's Tanisha Milca got the 'Bows off to a fast start, launching the first pitch she saw over the leftfield fence to give UH a quick 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Spartans tied the game at 1-1. Kelli Fangonilo led the inning off with a double to the left-centerfield gap. Brittany McConnell then got a single to left, leaving runners at the corners. Kayla Hayes then came through with an RBI single to left to drive in Fangonilo from third.
The 'Bows responded in the bottom half of the inning, retaking the lead, 2-1. Senior Brandi Peiler started the inning with a double to the right-centerfield gap. Kate Robinson followed with a single to left to put runners at the corners. Clare Warwick then came through with an RBI single to left to score pinch runner Kanani Warren from third.
In the fifth, UH added another run when Peiler drove in Milca from third on single to centerfield, to go up 3-1 with two innings to play.
For Baughman, this was her 13th complete game of the year.
Hawai`i will now face the Spartans in the series finale in approximately 20 minutes.
