HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (5-9) lost the series-finale to the No. 11 Long Beach State 49ers (9-2) 8-4 in the series-finale at Les Murakami Stadium Sunday.
Sam Spangler (0-2) took the loss for UH while David Roberts (1-0) got the win for LBSU.
Vinnie Catricala went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run to lead Hawai`i offensively. Alex Myers got his first start of the season and went 2-for-4 game with two RBI and a double while Jonathan Hee was 1-for-4 with two runs. Harrison Kuroda made his first career start on the mound, allowing two runs on just three hits in 4.2 innings.
Catricala got the UH offense started early, driving in two on single to right, making it 2-0 after the first inning. Myers then added to the Rainbow advantage, blasting a two-run double to left-center in the bottom of the third, giving Hawai`i a 4-0 lead.
LBSU got to Kuroda in the top of the fifth, putting up two runs before chasing him out of the game after loading the bases. But Jayson Kramer came in to close out the inning, keeping a slight 4-2 edge for the 'Bows.
But the Beach broke through in the seventh inning, posting five runs on four different pitchers in the inning to give themselves a 7-4 lead. LBSU added another run in the eighth, making the final 8-4.
Hawai`i will next host Alabama-Birmingham on Tuesday, March 11, and Wednesday, March 12. Both games will start at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
