No. 15 Hawai`i Softball Bounces Back, Beats Bengals 8-0

Box Score

HONOLULU - The 15th ranked University of Hawai`i softball team (16-5) bounced back to defeat Idaho State (1-11), 8-0 in five innings. Senior pitcher Jessica Morton fired a three-hit shut-out to help the Rainbow Wahine finish the "pool play" portion of the 2008 Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament with a 4-1 record.

The Bengals held the 'Bows scoreless in the first inning, but in the second, UH erupted four four quick runs. Kate Robinson started everything with a hard hit single to left-centerfield. She moved to second on a ground out to the pitcher, then Malamaisaua Manuma drew a walk to put two runners on board. Amanda Tauali`i then drove a sharp single down the first baseline that drove in Robinson from second and moved Manuma to third. Valana Manuma then ripped a shot down the leftfield line for an RBI double that scored her sister, Malamaisaua, from third. Melissa Gonzalez then drove a single up the middle to score both Tauali'i and Valana Manuma to end the rally with a 4-0 lead after two complete innings.

Robinson started the second inning with a walk. Brandi Peiler then drilled a shot over the leftfielder's head to the fence for a double that left both runners in scoring position for Malamaisaua Manuma, who then got a single to left that drove in Robinson from third. Manuma hustled to second on the throw home, putting both runners in scoring position again. Tauali`i then got her second RBI of the day by grounding out to the rightside of the infield, allowing pinch runner Kate Adams to score from third. After a line-out to third, Gonzalez got her second hit of the game with a double to centerfield that drove in Tauali'i all the way from first. That put UH up 7-0 after three innings.

In the fourth, Robinson launched her eighth home run of the season high over the leftfield fence for Hawai`i's eighth and final run of the game.

Hawai`i will finish the Malihini tournament tomorrow. The 'Bows will face Eastern Kentucky at 2:00 pm, with the winner of that game advancing to the tournament championship game immediately following at 4:00 pm.
