Box Score
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The No. 15 University of Hawai`i softball team (13-4) amassed 13 hits and capitolized on five errors en route to a 8-1 win over Pittsburgh.
Kate Robinson (5-3) earned the complete game win, giving up one run on four hits with no walks and a season high 10 strike outs. At the plate Robinson went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to help end UH's first roadtrip on a winning note.
Hawai`i jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Tanisha Milca led the game off with a line shot single up the middle. She moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Clare Warwick. Kaulana Gould then got an infield single to third to place runners at the corners for Hawai`i. Gould stole second to move both runners into scoring position for Robinson, who came through with a hard hit, opposite-field double down the rightfield line. Warwick and Gould scored easily and UH claimed the early lead, 2-0.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the fourth, when Mary Hecker launched a home run, into the wind, over the leftfield fence, cutting UH's lead in half, to 2-1.
The Rainbow Wahine responded by scoring three runs a piece in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Hawai`i scored three unearned runs, making the most of three crucial errors by the Pitt defense combined with two singles.
The 'Bows then started the top of the seventh with four straight hits by Robinson, Brandi Peiler, pinch hitter Valana Manuma and Julie Franklin. That led to three runs to push the final score to 8-1.
Hawai`i will return home tomorrow and then will host three straight tournaments at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Tournament, starting with the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament this coming week. The Rainbow Wahine will battle No. 25 Washington, Idaho State, Southern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, and the Netherlands national team.
